Yellow-legged Hornet (Vespa velutina) Information

URGENT: REPORT ALL SIGHTINGS

If you suspect you have seen a Yellow-legged Hornet, report it immediately. Do not try to kill or capture it yourself, as this may make tracking the nest difficult. Take a photo if possible, but prioritise reporting.

Identification: What to look for

It is vital that both beekeepers and the general public keep a watch for this invasive species. Even if you are not 100% sure, please report any suspected sightings regardless.

Key Distinguishing Features:

  • Legs: The distinct yellow ends to their legs (hence the name).
  • Colour: They are generally darker than common wasps or honey bees. The abdomen is mostly black with a single yellow/orange band near the tail.
  • Size: Slightly smaller than the European hornet but larger than a common wasp.

Latest Updates

The situation is evolving. For the most current data on the eradication programme and confirmed sighting locations, please refer to the official Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) page.
